Another year older (and deeper in debt)

Spread the love

On the occasion of my 52nd birthday. Another year older – perhaps not so much in debt though.

The following picture illustrates my general feelings regarding my birthday. I think the red things are strawberries and the brown doodahs are made of chocolate. Enjoy! 😉

Any idiot can face a crisis – it’s this day-to-day living that wears you out.

  1. Happy birthday! Interesting choice of chocolate doodahs, God’s hand pointing to the ever present hourglass?

    16 tons is one of my all-time favorite songs…
    “You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
    Another day older and deeper in debt.
    Saint Peter, don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go;
    I owe my soul to the company store.”
    Beautiful….

    Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

  2. Thanks, Aleks!

    It seemed appropriate to decorate the cake with memento mori. Hope the chocolate and strawberry combo detracted from some of the air of doom otherwise hanging around. I have very ambiguous feelings about my birthday. In some ways I don’t really want to be reminded that another year has gone since the last. At the same time I’d probably be deeply hurt if those near and dear to me didn’t remember.

    All well this time though – birthday cards and presents. (And various messages of encouragement from former students :-), former colleagues and friends.) Including a card with the Chekhov quote now added to the post.

  3. Wise man that Chekhov (at least with this quote), and funny. Perhaps my quote on facebook also applies to this birthday-crisis-situation? “Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things”
    Epictetus 55 AD-135 AD”. Not too silly that Epictetus either.
    🙂
