Tergiversate – Artwiculate round up from 18 April 2010

(Tweeting as @TSupercargo)

Tergiversate: to change sides or loyalties; to be evasive or ambiguous; to equivocate

It’s another one of those last minute round-ups I fear. Not that I’m tergiversating about doing this (much), but I am short of time!

Another really difficult word. It has no euphony. I’ve always disliked it, and to judge from some of the contributions I’m not alone.

RT @yuvsways TERGIVERSATE..tertgiverstate tertiarystate ..I still can’t really figure out how to say this word forget about using it #artwiculate

Of course, there’s always a contrary opinion:

RT @LorcanDesperado @Artwiculate Thanks for tergiversate … most fun of any word yet!

RT @tinanguyen Tergiversate? What the hell? Somebody put that in a haiku.

RT @InVinceWil gauging winds, terrain / the golfers tergiversate / before the best shot #haiku

RT @MinDavidWilson I want to be frank – but in fear of the outcome – I tergiversate. #artwiculate #haikuthrowdown

There were several people who took up @tinanguyen’s challenge, I thought @InVinceWil’s and @MinDavidWilson’s were the best.

Several people had variants on the next tweet, but I thought @amoz1939 put it most well.

RT @amoz1939 In two minds about tergiversate. Lots of doubts about this new word #artwiculate

There were a number of clever, funny malapropisms. I particularly liked this from @marcosarroyos

RT @marcosarroyos Don’t tell me…Tergiversate. Isn’t that the plastic car they made in East Germany?

And @mazpowles had another question:

RT @mazpowles Is it an olympic sport? My boss could tergiversate for Australia!

There were also a few philosphical perspectives on the word. This I thought particularly well observed:

RT @TiddK To err is human, to tergiversate is .. too

Here’s a nice twisted quote:

RT @LStephenCleary It is better tergiversate then to receive

But there were also those who stood up stoutly against the WOTD:

RT @californiakara Why tergiversate? Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter.

RT @JonPowles Tergiversate? Life’s too short. Nail your colours to the mast, stand up for what’s right, FIGHT. Or crawl back under a rock.

Just as the hurt caused by indecision was illustrated in this tweet from

RT @ultracutebot each time you tergiversate ~ i see more of my trust in you dissipate ~ your flimsy excuses do nothing but irritate

(Well, hurt = irritate – perhaps not.)

But uncertainty does not have to mean one is weak-willed; one can really be uncertain. In which case, what to do?

RT @SJHatzi And when I ask whether he loves me, all my intuition does is equivocate. I ask the oracle of daisies, they too tergiversate.
[And it was this tweet in the end that attracted the most votes and won @SJHatzi her latest crown.]

And you might even have a perfectly sensible reason:

RT @eilonwya10 “Do my knickers make my derriere look rotund?” asked his date. A wise man knows when to tergiversate. #artwiculate

RT @MaltaGoddess Of course I tergiversate! How else would you savor quatopygia?

(Well, that one might seems sensible to an Artwiculati, anyway!)

Remember …

RT @kings_indian Tergiversate Road is always a two way street.

Although …

RT @harrarp You’re in a train to hell. When the next stop is Tergiversate and the last stop was as well.

And you can always pun around with some idioms.

RT @baccatum How could you now take her side, tergiversate without saying a word!? You taciturn~coat.

RT @Wifsie RIP: My Lady Tergiversate – She had an unfortunate change of heart. #artwiculate

RT @navinsasikumar How does a meteorologist tergiversate? He clouds the issue

I liked the following twisted definition and not-quite film title.

RT @catmar604 Alien tergiversate : evasion of the body snatchers

And finally, just think about this:

RT @kado56 What do you get if you cross a bee with a donkey ? A tergiversate – ’cause he hums and he haws.

That’s my round-up. A bit breathless, but done in time to give a few people an extra point of two – maybe!

Handing off to @TheSupercargo now!
